March 29th, 2019. Hotel Sahara Star, Mumbai. The Economic Times is the undisputed leader in the pink paper category in India, one of the biggest financial papers in the world. Coming from the House that publishes the oldest English Language newspaper still in circulation, its position of influence as a thought leader is beyond reproach, its sheer weight in terms of circulation and connect virtually unassailable. Naturally, when a publication of such stature awards an entity, it is a matter of pride. Immense pride, in fact.
It is also a vindication, of the achievements that have been chalked despite odds that seems insurmountable at times. It is also an exoneration of sorts, a re-imposition of the faith on the work that is being done to stretch the horizons of education, to free the students from the shackles of classroom conformity, to empower them and make them battle ready for their lives ahead.
And this is exactly what Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) felt before a gathering of the high and mighty who had congregated to cheer at The Economic Times Awards ceremony.
The initiative was aimed at encompassing all educational institutions in the country – from pre-schools to those imparting post-graduate level pedagogy. As a matter of fact, as many as nine thousand institutions were covered in the study that was conducted pan-India in which the institutions were judged on a number of pre-set parameters: standard of faculty, infrastructure, pedagogical techniques, awareness of the brand, perceptions and placements. That the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) did consistently well in all the parameters was a pleasant surprise to the organisers and they were, as was said in the introductory address welcoming the recipient, “glad that the BESC was acting as the flagbearer of education in the eastern parts of the country”.
Ace film personality Subhash Ghai, who is also very closely associated with the world of academics gave the welcome speeches in the glittering ceremony and Prof Dilip Shah received the honour from woman achiever Gul Panag who straddles the spectrum from glamour to entrepreneurship, to a standing ovation of the crowd. Later Prof Shah explained “I was humbled by the recognition. It will only strengthen our resolve to continue the fight to spread the light of education, to spread empowerment, to refine our unending quest for excellence, to work towards creating the mind warriors who, in turn, will create the India of tomorrow”.
Anand Kumar from Patna, who selects thirty financially challenged students every year to provide them free coaching for the IIT’s and has an enviable track record of success with such students gave the keynote address in the event. He too has expressed his desire to visit the BESC campus and join forces for the cause of education.
