The Department of English, The Bhawanipur Education Society College conducted a special Skype session with Professor Tim Fulford,Professor of English, School of Humanities, De Montfort University (DMU), Leicester, UK. and Professor Julia Carlson, Professor in the English department at University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH. This was s part of their year-long seminar series on “Re-thinking Romanticism.” The webinarwas held on 20th August 2019.
Selected students from both UG and PG department of English, BESCpresented their papers. Toshi Yadav’s paper ‘Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Subversive Romanticism’ focused on the ‘I’ of the Cartesian Rationality and explored its destructive tangent in the novel. Garima Upadhyay’s paper ‘The Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog: A Case Study in German Romanticismviewed through the Existentialist Philosophy of Soren Kierkegaard’ portrayed multiple Romantic tributaries that can be associated with the particular painting. Tanisha Rudra presented her paper on ‘Bio-diversity in Crisis: Its Reflection on Romantic Literature’ which was an eco-centric depiction that also focused on the bio-diversity of the Botanical Gardens in Kolkata. 3rd year English honours students Vinayak Bose and Sutirtho Roy in their paper ‘The Romantics and the World Today: Contrasting Perspectives in Death, Desire and Abundance’ attempted to manifest the dichotomy of the idealistic Romantic yearning for immortality and the present degrading condition of the environment. Prof Fulford and Carlson made pertinent comments, guiding all the five speakers individually and enlightening them as well as all the others assembled in the hall, with fascinating and helpful information. The department was honoured to have such eminent scholars to guide the students who attempted to excavate and explore the deeper layers of Romanticism.
