In commemoration of the ‘divine mentor’ Rabindranath Tagore’s 162nd birth anniversary, the Department of Commerce, UG (Afternoon and Evening Section) hosted a grandiose celebration aptly named ‘Kobi Pronam’ on the evening of the 15th of May, 2023. The Concept Hall became the setting for this resplendent event where distinguished guests, esteemed faculty members, enthusiastic students from the Commerce Department’s Afternoon and Evening sections, as well as faculty from other departments gathered to pay homage to the legendary bard.
The celebration commenced with a welcome address by the coordinator of the student activities committee and programme coordinator, Ms. Arundhati Mazumder, followed by the inaugural session with a symbolic gesture of reverence as the lamp was ceremoniously lit and a garland was regardfully placed upon Rabindranath Tagore’s ethereal portrait, honouring the timeless legacy of Tagore’s literary brilliance by Dr. Subhabrata Ganguly, the Teacher-in-Charge of The BESC; Dr. Sandip Dan, Rector of The BESC; Mr. Saspo Chakraborty, Vice-Principal (Dept of Commerce Aft. & Eve. Section) of The BESC; Prof. Dilip Shah, Dean of Student Affairs at The BESC; Ms. Paramita Chakravarty, Coordinator of M. Com at The BESC; and Ms. Atreyee Ganguly, Coordinator of the Department of Commerce (Afternoon and Evening Section), The BESC.
Following this, the hosts of the evening, Ms. Gargi and Mr. Nirjhar Ghosh took over, radiating their energy and initiating the meticulously curated program. Further, Dr. Subhabrata Ganguly, the Teacher-in-charge, delivered an opening address, adding a touch of official grace to the proceedings. His eloquent words reverberated through the hall, felicitously setting the tone for the evening.
The celebration started off with a mellifluous performance of Udbodhoni Sangeet by faculty members Atreyee Ganguly, Arundhati Mazumder, Dyuti Sinha, Baishakhi Chakraborty, Saikat Nandy, Sukanya Chatterjee, Soumi Roy Chowdhury and Nirjhar Ghosh. Their group song was accompanied by Suranjana’s (student) dance performance showcasing the fusion of music and dance.
Next, the podium was graced by Prof. Dilip Shah, Dean of Student Affairs, to address the gathering. His profound words of encouragement uplifted the spirits of the attendees, instilling in them a sense of pride in their literary heritage. Subsequently, Poulomi (student) took the stage and captivated all with a poignant recitation of Tagore’s ‘Shankho’ showcasing the depth and versatility of our students.
The celebration continued to unfold with an enchanting dance performance by our talented students, leaving the spectators in awe of their rhythmic movements. This was followed by a discussion on the various humorous incidents around Tagore and his life by the Rector of the college, Dr. Sandip Dan, who engaged the audience with his lucidity and fervour.
To further enthral the gathering, the faculty members, namely Arundhati Mazumder and Baishakhi Chakraborty, and students (Abhirup, Priyangshu, Suchetan, Abhilash) collaborated on a medley song, harmoniously blending their voices in celebration of the unison of ‘Baul Geeti’ & ‘Rabindra Sangeet’. The audience was transported to realms of beauty and passion as they experienced the recitation of the faculty member, Surya Saha, who graced the stage to present his own heart-warming poem in regard for Tagore. Faculty, Rosalin Mukherjee and Sukanya Chatterjee, then showcased their graceful movements and artistic finesse with a charming dance performance.
The recitation of Tagore’s masterpiece, ‘Neerjhorer Shopno Bhongo,’ followed, with faculty members Gargi, Ria Saha, and Nirjhar Ghosh breathing life into the profound verses, evoking a range of emotions. The students (Abhirup, Priyangshu, Suchetan, Abhilash & Satabisha) once again took the stage with a medley song, their voices harmonizing to create an almost disarming musical experience.
Next, Mr Saspo Chakraborty, Vice-Principal, graced the stage to recite the soulful verses of Sankha Ghosh’s ‘Mitthye Kotha’, leaving the audience rapt. Following this, the instrumental performance of violin and guitar by the students (Abhirup & Priyanshu) added a soothing and melodic element to the celebration. The stage was further adorned with a delightful duet song by the faculty members, Atreyee Ganguly and Soumi Roy Chowdhury, their voices blending in perfect harmony, resonating with the sentiments of Tagore’s timeless compositions.
The celebration also included a special performance by Debasish Majumdar, an accomplished musician and composer, who shared his time and expertise with our students and teachers during rehearsals, methodically composing the productions. Mr Majumdar collaborated with a student (Abhilash) bringing a unique and entrancing element to the event, leaving the audience in awe of the mellifluent composition.
The faculty members of the department then took stage, presenting a comical Sruti Natok, Tagore’s ‘Abhyarthana.’ The collective efforts of Saspo Chakraborty, Subhendu Banerjee, Atreyee Ganguly, Dr. Joyeta Bhadury, Debdutta Sen, Narayan Bhattacharya, Saikat Nandy, Souvik Chakraborty, Tusitt Seal, Nirjhar Ghosh, Dyuti Sinha, and Gargi brought the story to life.
Following, faculty members Arundhati Mazumder, Baishakhi Chakraborty, Sukanya Chatterjee, Rosalin Mukherjee, and Prerana Saha then graced the stage with their enthralling group dance- a mesmerizing display of grace, coordination, artistry in the fascinating choreography. The performance left an indelible impression, showcasing the immense talent of the faculty members.
As the evening drew to a close, Dr. Joyeta Bhadury extended her heartfelt gratitude to the management and all the esteemed guests, participants, faculty members, and students who made the celebration of ‘Kobi Pronam’ a resounding success.
