What could have been a better way than celebrating Independence day with special ones. Thirty students along with professors Divyesh Shah and Vijay Kothari with our motto “NOT ME BUT YOU” the students endeavoured to carve a smile each on the faces of all the destitute children of The Refuge orphanage.
This Institution with its present name “THE REFUGE” was established in the year 1901 by a Christian gentleman named Mr. Ananda Mohan Biswas (since deceased). But its origin dates a few years back to the closing years of the last century when some enthusiastic young men of the Brahmo samaj founded a home for the hopeless, and the helpless under the name of “Das Ashram”. After a few years the Ashram had to be closed down for want of funds. It was then that Mr. Ananda Mohan Biswas came forward to take upon himself the burden of maintaining the helpless men and women discharged from the Das Ashram, and with them as the first inmates, started the Institution in a rented house which has in course of time grown into this fairly big home with separate buildings for girls and boys. Along with education up to 10th standard the orphanage also provides vocational training to its children. Not only that, even after joining college if they face financial glitch the institution is always ready to help them.
From the college, the students left for the orphanage in the afternoon and after an hour’s bus journey they reached the orphanage. Those special ones were overjoyed seeing the students and their happy faces took away the students’ weariness. The evening snacks were served to them, with greetings of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai & Vande Matram’ which consisted of bananas, ladoos, and idlis. After snacks they played musical chairs with the students, the winners received a chocolate each. Around 4pm the students bid them adieu with a promise to return whenever the kids needed them.
There was definitely something special about those children, though devoid of resources they made the best use of whatever was available. The ancient, robust building which housed 300 children was spick-and-span this speaks volumes about their discipline. The students were greatly touched, and would like thank the professors and NSS for such a wonderful lifetime experience.
