On the 28th of August, a seminar was held at the Jubilee Hall on ‘Environment and Sustainability,’ at the Bhawanipur Education Society College. Students from all three years, as well as all the professors of the BBA department came to attend the event, as the subject was something that everything could learn a thing or two from.
The first speaker for the day was Mrs. Karuna Singh, the regional director for Earth Day Network, an organization focused on spreading their environmental movement worldwide. She talked about how in the current day where we’re undergoing a climate crisis, it’s important now more than ever for us to be accountable for the planet. One of the concepts she talked about was ‘vampire energy,’ an electrical drain of energy that occurs when we leave our devices plugged into wall sockets. This in turn, is a waste of power that most of us don’t notice takes place. Some other ways we could go green would be to properly dispose e-waste, and upcycling waste into something resourceful. She also stressed on the importance of reducing our carbon footprints, especially for the future of Earth.
The next to speak was Mr. Deb A. Mukherjee, who continued with the theme of sustainability, and gave a more business-like aspect to it. His approach to it was how being sustainable should be profitable in the long run, and how any business should be making long-term profits, and not short-term profits. He also mentioned that any business would only benefit from being sustainable, and that it is a company’s duty to protect the environment. After the first two speakers, a few questions were entertained from the audience, and a very valid point was brought up! Since we are aiming to reduce plastic, there shouldn’t be water bottles kept, but rather a jug of water.
Overall, the seminar was a huge success, with huge audience to back for it. As citizens of this planet, it’s our duty to live sustainably for not only ourselves, but the future generation, and the knowledge gained from today can definitely help put our best foot forward.
