Since its inception Anmol Biscuits has grown multifold and has even gone beyond the Indian territory to secure a place in the global marketplace by facilitating exports. Anmol Biscuits believe theoretical knowledge is important, but it is the practical demonstration and understanding of things that brings perfection. Hence, they introduced their endeavor towards this vision through Anmol Udaan.Anmol Udaan is a program wherein they encourage students to visit their manufacturing units at Dankuni, West Bengal and at Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Here, they can learn about the technological wonders of the most sophisticated machinery assisted by human effort and integrity.
The undergraduates of Bhawanipur Education Society College, Department of Management got this unique opportunity to visit the Anmol Biscuit Manufacturing Unitsituated in Dankuni, West Bengal on 31 st January 2019 due to the sincere efforts of Dr. Tridib Sengupta for which the students are immensely grateful. The students were welcomed at the Dankuni manufacturing unit of Anmol biscuits by the HR head of the plant Mr. Shushanto Roy. Mr. Roy warmly welcomed the students and briefed them up with the history and operations of Anmol Biscuits. He even claimed the manufacturing unit is one of the biggest units in eastern India and is spread over an area 11.5 acres. It is equipped with modern technologies and international machinery which are mainly imported from Italy and Japan. Most of the machines are made by well-established and reliable brands such as Bosch. These machines have an average life time of 12 -15 years.
The students were taken for a tour to the production facility to provide a more practical understanding. As the plant follows a strict hygiene rules all the students were provided with headgears which would prevent the products from being contaminated. The students were also told not to touch any raw material, dough or machinery as it could lead to contamination, injuries or malfunctions. The students were guided into the plant by Mr. Anil Bose, Production Manager. The students were taken to the section of the plant where the dry and wet ingredients such as flour, sugar cream, etc. are mixed in automated mixing machines worth Rs. 80,000 to prepare the perfect dough for the biscuits. The machines as automated, the batter once made is rolled into thin sheets and transported to the other department through conveyers, thus avoid human touch and maintaining hygiene. The rolled sheets are passed through a machine which automatically cuts the sheets into perfectly sized biscuits. The biscuits are then passed through a long oven which has 5 different zones, each zone is heated to different temperature, which bakes the product to crisp perfectly. The freshly baked biscuits are then sent to the lower level where a modern packaging machine worth Rs 12 lakh helps in easy and fast packaging of the freshly baked products. The packets of biscuits are then filled in cartoon and sent to the warehouse from where it is distributed all over India. Anmol Biscuits even export their products to eastern Africa and South American countries. As the biscuits were being packed there were many biscuits which broke in the course and thus could not be packed and marketed to the consumers, these biscuits which lead to wastages in the production process were separated by the workers. The production manager told the students that there is maximum 2% wastage in the whole production process and most of this wastage is reprocessed as dust and mixed in new batch.
The students then assembled into the seminar hall to interact with the Human Resource, Finance and Production department heads. Due to the interactive session the students came to know about various tools and technique which they had previously read in books. The finance manager revealed that the company has achieved a turnover of Rs. 1500 crores in the previous financial year and aims to achieve a turnover of Rs. 2000 crores this year. The production manager told the undergraduates that they follow preventive maintenance system to take care of the advance and expensive fleet of machinery. Preventive maintenance refers to maintenance that is frequently performed on a piece of machinery to decrease the probability of it failing leading to a break in the production line. Since the production requires large quantity of raw materials, raw materials are stocked in in-house stores and the stores are maintained on FIFO Method. As the name indicates under First In, First Out (FIFO) method the first unit of raw material taken in the store is to be released first to the manufacturing department. Lastly, the Human Resource manager told us that the plant operated 24×7 and thus to avoid dullness in work there is a relieving system through which the workers could relax and rejuvenate which does not lead the decline in work efficiency. There is a medical clinic which is also available all the time to treat the workers in case they have an injury or an ailment. The workers are paid on hour rate basis i.e., they are paid based on actual hours worked.
The industrial visit to Anmol Industries Ltd., Dankuni has been a learning session for the student of Management. They got an outstanding opportunity to understand the theories they had learned only in books. The management students of Bhawanipur Education Society College look forward for more such visits which can provide them a practical understanding of business houses work.
