Semantics never did find defining theatrical art an easy ordeal. While theatre enraptures its viewers to ponder over the rigid core of one’s beliefs, it is the unique portrayal of recent social shenanigans where we find its inherent productive beauty… Enact is such collective where like-minded audacious performers take verbal arms to fight in the perpetual war of social oppression and injustice. On August 6th, 2015, they flung open their doors to aspiring theatrical performers who were willing to join their creed. Their induction ceremony commenced with the collective representative, Anirudh Mackar inviting all members to the house. He went on to explain what Enact was, did and what they were willing to do in scenes to come. Prof. Subhasis Dasgupta who is the collective-teacher coordinator took to the stage and as he eased into character, he was able to reform the established formal atmosphere into an interactive hub; as all appreciative performers do, prelude to his bow, he acknowledged and thanked all the stage-crew members, formally labelled as volunteers. Anirudh enters the stage a second time to discuss an agenda. Giving a detailed explanation of a social initiative taken by Yes Bank, primarily a contest where an individual is required to make a short social film, he encouraged all members of the house to participate. A video containing clips from Enact’s past performances was shown to make aware the general idea of what the inductees could look forward to, and with this the induction ceremony was concluded.
The guest faculty for the workshop was the renowned filmmaker- Debasish Sen Sharma. No sooner had he taken to the stage, he commanded… silence… hark (squeal, vibrations and noises thereabout). After what seemed like an epoch of self-realisation, he gently asked the participants to narrate or give meaning to the unique beat-less music- sound(s) that they heard. This was followed by an exercise of body motion where participants were asked to move freely until he gave a signal. All participants were to figuratively freeze when the aforementioned signal was given, he explained the purpose of this exercise in due time. Similar other exercises were done. Vocal training or rather the basics of elocution was the final lesson which drew the curtain to the eventful afternoon.
