The Department of Chemistry, The Bhawanipur Education Society College in collaboration with Indian Chemical Society, Kolkata organized one-day seminar entitled “Chemistry Behind Phytochemicals Used as Herbal Medicines for the Treatment of Diseases of Human Being” on December 2, 2022 from 1.30 pm to 5.00 pm. Total 33 students, 26 teachers, 1 research scholar and 5 support staff of the Science Section of our college as well as from the nearby colleges participated in this seminar. In the inaugural session, welcome address was given by Teacher-in-Charge Sir of our college. The inaugural Speech was given by Dr. Samir Kanti Datta, Dean of Science of our college.
In the Technical Sessions we have two resource persons – Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Kumar Maity, Professor and Former Head, Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Jadavpur University, Kolkata and Prof. (Dr.) Chittaranjan Sinha Professor and Former Head, Department of Chemistry, Jadavpur University, Kolkata. The distinguished resource persons of the technical sessions addressed their views about the application of the herbal medicines for the treatment of diseases of human being. Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Kumar Maity delivered lecture on the topic on “Potential of Plants Secondary Metabolites as Life Saving Drugs”. He explained and elaborated very well and lucid way of different kind of life saving drugs. The lecture session was followed by the question answer session. Students and teachers were very much enlightened by this inspiring lecture of Prof. Maity. Our second distinguished resource person Prof. (Dr) Chittaranjan Sinha elucidated the role of different metals in medicines. He described all in the wider aspects that how the metal ions play a crucial role from ancient time to till date. This technical session of the seminar was very informative and inspiring to the participants to be familiar on the life history of Sir Prafulla Chandra Ray and his contribution to modern science. Prof. (Dr.) Anup Kumar Sikdar, Research Advisor of our college briefly discussed the overall session of the day.
The session was ended with the vote of thanks by Dr. Pinki Saha Sardar, VP Sc. of our college.
From an academic standpoint, this seminar was a major success for the chemistry department’s students as well as for the college.
Umang 2014 hosted the event ‘Debate’ in which 11 colleges participated. Debate was one of the most interesting events of Umang. The event started at 10:30am in the auditorium. The topic of debate was ‘Struggle is not necessary for success’. The time allotted to each speaker was three minutes and an additional one minute.
