Breast cancer has ranked number one cancer among Indian females with age adjusted rate as high as 25.8 per 100,000 women and mortality 12.7 per 100,000 women. Data reports from various latest national cancer registries were compared for incidence, mortality rates which paint a terribly scary picture. What is even more worrisome is the fact that even basic awareness about breast cancer and the symptoms that should trigger alarms are woefully inadequate, even among the educated in the country. To address these and various related issues a Breast cancer Awareness programme was organised by the BESC in association with Hitaishini, an NGO working in the field.
Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) welcomed the speaker Krishna Dutta, from Hitaishini and thanked Vidya Pai for her efforts in making the programme happen.
Students whop were present in the programme were shown a power point presentation about Breast Cancer, the flags that should act as early warning signals, the reasons behind the growing incidence of the menace and the ways and means of tackling the same.
Students were also taken through the motion so as to make them aware about the ways of self-examination. The speakers went to great lengths to explain the efficacies of self-examination and pointed out why it remains the first liner of defence against the dreaded disease.
Various other facts and figures were also touched upon that aimed at raising the levels of awareness about breast cancer.
All the participants were given pink bows as a mark of appreciation apart from a booklet that doubles as a toolkit for self-examination.
