February 12th, 2019. Before the winter departs and the sweltering sun starts to scorch its way through the horizon, the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC) is known to organise its annual picnic where members of the faculty and students drop their guards and spend a day renewing old bonds, forging new ones and mostly, just chilling.
The perennial favourite as the picnic spot is Ibiza – a resort on the outskirts of the city which not only is well spread out, secure with all available entertainment options but is also known to spread a delectable fare which has now been appreciated for years at an end.
As many as four hundred students and faculty members – that is eight busloads of BE-ites trooped out of the college for the picnic, expectation of a fun and gaiety filled day writ large on their faces. Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of the College, was naturally the spirit that galvanised the group, his very presence silently urging all to maximise their enjoyment.
The food flowed, as is customary with all events BESC and students gorged themselves – one course barely polished off before the arrival of the next.
The games that were played, and mention must be made of Prof Vivek Patwari, who took special interest in ensuring that all students (and some members of the faculty) participate. After witnessing the intense competitiveness of Umang, the games, played for the sake of participation were a welcome change to the BE-ites, who are otherwise known for their unwavering spirit and focus on the victory stand, irrespective of the consequences.
Hit the Wicket, Relay Race, Treasure Hunt, Sack Race, Musical Chair, Balloon Games – the games BESC played were numerous, what was striking was the level of participation and the childish peals that they elicited, having a cathartic effect on the students and the teachers – winning friends and bursting stresses, as it were.
But like all good things, the picnic too, came to a pass and after an equally hearty tea and snacks (not that anyone was in a position to eat more) it was time to board the respective buses for the journey back to the campus. The songs on the way back were as muted as they were vibrant on the way up, and the only cheer was when Prof Dilip Shah promised a repeat next year.
