Name of the Programme: Application of electronic circuits and sensors – AECAS 2024
Type of programme: Add-on course
Organizing department: Electronics
Duration of the programme: 10-06-2024 – 22-11-2024
Time: 30-hours
Details of Resource persons:
Dr. Debarup Roy, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Electronics
Dr. Monali Sil, CWTT, Dept. of Electronics
Mr. Rabisankar Bag, CWTT, Dept. of Electronics
Mr. Sudipto Koley, Laboratory Assistant, Dept. of Electronics
No .of Participants: 7 students (Physics: 1 and Computer Science: 6)
Course content:
Experiment 1:A rudimentary simulation of power level detection
Experiment 2:A model of traffic signal control system
Experiment 3:Counter with variable clock frequency and displayed using 7-segment display
Experiment 4:Counting obstacle and displayed on 7-segment display
Experiment 5:Velocity calculation using Arduino microcontroller
Objective of the event: To give a flavour of some interesting and real applications of electronics
Brief description of the event: The 30-hour add-on course is designed with a view to enable the course participants to understand the domain of electronics beyond the regular curriculum. The experiments have been carefully chosen keeping in mind the direct application of textbook material in real life scenarios. The hands-on practical on the electronic circuits combined with the associated design troubles helped the students realize the effort that goes into troubleshooting and hence, to come up with tractable solutions. The experiments on the analogy of charging and discharging of rechargeable batteries were demonstrated to give the students an understanding of resistor-capacitor circuits beyond the usual curricular text. The role of digital counters in display boards at shopping centres and busy road cross-sections was elaborated upon in this course. Finally, the potential application of electronic sensors in reading a speeding object or to count the number of objects occupying a given closed space was also discussed and realized.
At the end of the course, the participants were tested on their theoretical knowledge and practical understanding of the experiments performed. The participants seemed to be visibly pleased with the course structure and the manual which was handed over to them on the day of valediction. The course ended with an earnest urge for continuation of this course with newer and more impactful experiments from both the participants and the academic office bearers.
Course outcome: The participants learned how electronics work in real life and hopefully, gathered a sense of what a course curriculum having an alignment with the electronics manufacturing sector should be.
