Sweeping the unpleasant discourse of formality under the rug, presenting a workshop just as important but not as serious as the other ones, welcoming a humorous mentor who repeatedly did not give a “damn”, Expressions, the media collective, conducted a Report Writing Workshop. A workshop focused on making aware to the college media team (Expressions) the roots and tricks of the trade was conducted on August 25th and 26th, 2015. The requirement of a faculty who could guide the workshop towards its predestined direction was that of an experienced journalist. Therefore Mr. Ganguly, a journalist whose influence spans across three continents was invited to conduct the workshop. The chosen venue for the slaughter of misconception of media stereotype was the second floor auditorium also referred to as NCR at the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC). The’ tutorial’ commenced at 1:00 pm and lasted till 2:30 pm. A PowerPoint presentation was set on the projector screen, a horde of students anxious to salvage knowledge took to their seats, and so in this monotonous fashion the workshop started.
A brief introduction to media as a whole was given followed by the process of how it is branched which was complemented by references to his experiences in the field. The basics of reporting or rather writing such as K.I.S.S (keep it simple, stupid!) was explained in brief. The slides on the screen did not fail to awe the attendees and make some giggle; sarcasm was inherent, wisdom was affluent. The process of how a team gathers information and the stages relating to the information eventually being printed was explained in detail. The primary function and importance of each individual in a media team, paying heed to the current state of the Expressions team was duly discussed. Taking a slight discourse into conclusion, Mr. Ganguly who is also known as Chawm narrated a fable pertaining to morals which was the moral of the story. He explained that Expressions had the capability of being more than a mere college collective, with the talented pool of members and the likely possibility of better ones in the roster, he encouraged the collective as a whole to take a stand and work towards the path of the recognition.
