The Bhawanipur Education Society College organized an Intra Mun Conference of two days 23 & 24 September 2023, with two committees, UNCSW (United Nations Commission on the Status of Women), AIPPM ( All India Political Parties Meet). IP (International Press) was also there which represented the Photography and Reporting Verticals. The opening ceremony of the Intra Mun 2023 started with a seminar on human rights hosted by Dr. Jinal Dariya who is currently a faculty in University of London and a Human Rights enthusiast and was one of the advisory members of the pilot version of The BESC AON. All the delegates attended this seminar and asked relevant questions concerning human rights.
The UNCSW and AIPPM conference was held in the Society Hall from 11:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. with a short break of one hour in between the conference discussion. The UNCSW committee was chaired by Aman Sinha and Sofia Parveen. The AIPPM conference was moderated by Ankit Kumar Singh. Pooja Dabrai was the Editor in Chief and Sagnik Ghosh was the Photography Head of the International Press. There were around 100 enthusiastic delegates who took part in the Intra Mun 2023. The objective of mobilizing such a conference within the college premises was to promote and encourage college students to participate in Model United Nations (MUN). MUN helps students develop leadership skills, research, writing, public speaking, and problem-solving skills.
Day 1 – 23rd September 2023 On the first day, the delegates of UNCSW were briefed about the UN For Rop which was followed throughout the conference for two days. In the first session, all the delegates representing different countries gave their formal speeches representing their stance on the agenda being on the committee. In the second session, the delegates deliberated on the issue of Sexual Violence against women under conditions of political instability with emphasis on indigenous groups. The delegates of Austria, Denmark, Israel, and China in their speech during the Moderated Caucus mentioned various kinds of Sexual Violence faced by indigenous women in their country and the policies their government has adopted to eradicate. POIs were asked after each speech and the delegates sincerely answered the questions raised, defending their country and its policies.
On the first day of the AIPPM conference, a unanimous motion was passed to begin opening statements regarding the agenda ‘Discussion on the utility and feasibility of implementing a UCC (Uniform Civil Code) to reduce religious conflicts and outlining a plan for the same’. The conference began with a general consensus where 13 members supported UCC and 5 members were against it. Both BJP and Congress leaders had raised various important and convincing points and repeatedly went back and forth discussing why India does or does not need UCC. The final statement of the delegates opened up room for more back-and-forth shots as BJP argued that uprisings were caused because UCC implementation will be taken care of but have not specified how it will be done.
After many arguments where the moderator had to step in several times to maintain the decorum in the hall, the sessions for Day 1 ended, and had decided to begin the question hour in Session 3 on the very next day. The reporters and the photographers of the International Press were present covering the discussion happening at the conferences.
Day 2: 24th September 2023 On the second day in the UNCSW committee, discussions on promoting Economic Empowerment, Education, Healthcare, and Sanitation concerning women with special emphasis on indigenous groups. All the delegates spoke about the various issues faced by the indigenous women in their country concerning these areas. A heated argument between the delegates from the USA, China, India, and Pakistan facilitated the flow of the discussion in the Committee. All the delegates tried to emphasize their country’s stance regarding these issues in their speech and suggested policies that can help to solve the problems faced by indigenous women around the world. An Unmoderated Caucus of 15 minutes was given to the delegates to draft a consensus report at the end of the session.
On the second day of the AIPPM conference, Congress began the questioning round with Gaurav Gogoi questioning BJP’s plans to safeguard Kashmir from the prevalent terrorism. Nitin Gadkari answered by stating that after BJP came to power, terrorism incidents in Kashmir were reduced by 68%, which caused a heated back and forth between Nitin Gadkari and Gaurav Gogoi. The session was adjourned soon after to prepare a respective press release stating their demands and arguments before re-commencing once more to answer the press conference questions by the reporters present. Overall, the conference failed to reach a consensus on any relevant point, as no delegates failed to take shots at each other during the question hour.
