8. Objective of the event:
a. Introduce participants to the fundamentals of Fortran programming.
b. Enhance participants’ understanding of Fortran syntax, data types, and control structures.
c. Develop knowledge in Fortran programming and its applications in Chemistry.
d. Provide hands-on exercises to reinforce the learning experience.
9. Brief description of the event:
The Department of Chemistry, The Bhawanipur Education Society college in collaboration with Department of Chemistry, Uluberia College organised a 7 days Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on Computer Programming Basics (FORTRAN) according to the UG CBCS curriculum of Calcutta University. The inauguration ceremony at BES college included welcome addresses by Dr. Pinki Saha Sardar (V.P Sc.), Dr. Samir Kanti Dutta (Dean of Science), the BES college and Dr. Debasish Pal, Special guest, Principal, Uluberia College, emphasizing the importance of Fortran in the Calcutta University UG CBCS Chemistry Curriculum, and an introduction to the program’s scope was delivered by Dr. Priyotosh Dutta, Programme advisor, Anandamohan College. 18 participants from 15 different colleges in West Bengal like The BES college, City College, Charuchandra College, The Heritage College, Dinabandhu Andrews College, Uluberia College etc. have been actively participated in this programme.
Dr. Rahul Sharma led the first half of Day One (Technical Session-1) discussing Fortran Language Elements and Keywords, followed by Dr. Arnab Gangopadhyay’s second half (Technical Session-2), discussing Logical and Relational Operations. Dr. Arnab Gangopadhyay discussed loop implementation in Technical Session-3, while Dr. Timir Hajari discussed 1D and 2D array variables in Technical Session-4. Dr. Sukanya Chakrabarty discussed matrix operation in Technical Session-5. The first half of the third day (Technical Session- 6) was conducted by Dr. Subhasree Ghosh and she discussed the Function and Subroutine. Then in Technical Session- 7, the Roots of the Equation by the Bisection method was discussed by Dr. Arnab Gangopadhyay. In the post-lunch session (Technical Session- 8), Roots of Equation: Newton-Raphson was discussed by Dr. Kinshuk Banerjee, and Technical Hands-on Session was conducted by Dr. Arnab Gangopadhyay. Dr. Syed Sahed Riaz discussed Numerical Differentiation for Van-der Waal Gas and Potentiometric titration in Technical Session-9, followed by Numerical Integration by Trapezoidal method in Technical Session-10 and Simpson’s 1/3 Method in Technical Session-11 was delivered by Dr. Kinshuk Banerjee with some Hands-on. The first half of the fifth Day (Technical Session- 12) was conducted by Dr. Sukanya Chakrabarty. She discussed various Case Studies in Maxwell- Boltzmann Gas equations in 1D, 2D and 3D. In Technical Session- 13, Dr. Sukanya Chakrabarty discussed integration problems from Thermodynamics. In the post- lunch session (Technical Session- 14), Integration Problems from Quantum Mechanics were discussed by Dr. Arnab Gangopadhyay, and Technical Hands-on Session was conducted by Dr. Sukanya Chakrabarty. On Day Six, Technical Session- 15 was conducted by Dr. Arnab Gangopadhyay, Dr. Kinshuk Banerjee, and Dr. Rahul Sharma and they discussed the plot and visualization of data using the gnu plot. Then in Technical Session- 16, an Assessment of participants was conducted. In the post-lunch session (Technical Session- 17), the Doubt clearing and discussion session was conducted in Technical Hands-on Session. On Day Seven, Technical Session- 18, the Doubt clearing and discussion session was conducted by all the resource persons. In the post-lunch session, the 7- day Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Fortran was ended by the valedictory session and the certificates are distributed among the participants.
10. Outcome of the event:
The 7-day Faculty Development Program on Fortran, based on Calcutta University’s UG CBCS Curriculum, significantly enhanced participants’ knowledge and skills in Fortran programming and its applications in Chemistry.
