On 23rd May 2023, The Bhawanipur Education Society College organized a workshop on ‘Exciting Careers in Communication’ in the Placement Hall of the college campus from 11 AM onwards. The speakers for the event were representatives of the Delhi School of Communication – Ms. Rupanjali Lahiri, Associate Director, DSC, and Mr Dharam Arora, MD, The Source. They also elaborated on the three specializations that The DSC offers to their students namely ‘Public Relations Journalism’, Advertising & Entertainment Management, and Marketing & Digital Media.
The organizers challenged the participants with fun quiz activities related to the field of Mass Communication. This quiz involved games like, Guess the jingle, Guess the brand logo & Guess the Brand Ambassador. Participants were shown partial or distorted versions of famous brand logos, and they had to identify the brand associated with each logo. This activity tested their visual & audio recognition skills and knowledge of popular brands in the mass communication industry. The quiz on guessing the brand ambassador tested their knowledge of brand endorsements and celebrities associated with specific brands. About 50 students participated in the event.
These quizzes went beyond the basic identification of brand logos, jingles, slogans, and brand ambassadors. They delved into more intricate aspects of mass communication, requiring participants to demonstrate their comprehensive understanding of the field. By engaging in practical exercises, the workshop fostered a deeper understanding of the subject matter and prepared participants for the complexities of the field. Questions around the full forms of TRP, BARC, etc. were to make the students familiar with the industry jargon and also to develop their inclinations towards the industry career requirements like that of copywriters, content creators, designers, etc.
The workshop concluded with an interesting and creative activity where the participants were presented with a problem statement: They had to design an advertisement for an umbrella with holes in it. The objective was to bring out creativity and marketing skills within a limited time frame of twenty minutes while keeping in mind the key elements of marketing, also known as the “4 Ps” (Product, Price, Place, and Promotion).
The students were given the task of developing a brand name, tagline, slogan, logo, and unique selling proposition (USP) for their umbrella brand. They were encouraged to think outside the box and incorporate their ideas into their advertisements. During the presentation of the advertisements, it was evident that different teams had approached the task from diverse perspectives. Some students portrayed the umbrella as a chic and decorative product, highlighting its distinct USP and style. On the other hand, some students drew inspiration from the fashion industry and presented umbrellas as a fashion statement.
Among the participants, a team of six students named their brand “Rag-Rella” and their creative concept earned them the first prize. The team’s success was attributed to their in-depth knowledge and thorough research about their brand. They demonstrated a deep understanding of the market and effectively communicated the value proposition of their product. To conclude the workshop, Prof. Vasundhara Mishra shared a deep and thoughtful poem that she wrote on the spot. The organizers acknowledged the efforts and enthusiasm shown by the participants and rewarded them with goodies as a token of appreciation for their active participation. Afterwards, the speakers were felicitated by Prof. Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Minakshi Chaturvedi, Coordinator B.Com (Morning), and Prof. Vasundhara Mishra.
