The Department of Commerce has envisioned ‘Career Talks – A Series’, over a period of two months (April ’23-May ’23) particularly for the semester VI students who are soon to leave the guided threshold of the college and venture into professional space. This is perhaps the most befitting time to make them aware of the various career opportunities that await their exploring. The series is designed to comprise five chapters, namely on healthcare management, entrepreneurship development, employability skills and/or industry requisites in the form of a panel discussion with human resource managers of prominent business houses, stock market and unconventional careers which have not only boomed in the last few years but also proven to be lucrative.
The first chapter ‘Healthcare Management’ was held on the 1st of April ’23 at 5:30pm in the second-floor society hall. The programme commenced with a welcome address followed by an official inauguration of the series by the compere of the evening and the coordinator of the Student Activities Committee, Ms Arundhati Mazumder. Thereafter the felicitation ceremony was conducted wherein the two eminent speakers, Dr Subhrojyoti Bhowmick, Clinical Director, Peerless Hospital and Dr Snigdha Basu, Principal IMS, were presented with tokens of appreciation.
Dr Subharata Ganguly, Teacher in Charge, delivered a felicitous opening address, setting the tone for the session. The programme furthered with Dr Basu giving an overview of the curriculum that is followed under healthcare management. She walked the students through the academic courses/degrees which students could choose to pursue after completing the graduation programme in Commerce.
The keynoter of the evening Dr Bhowmick was then introduced and invited to take stage for his deliberation. With his lucid oration and amiable disposition, he was quick to strike an instant connection with the students. He presented a detailed PPT covering the scope of healthcare management as a career. He shared anecdotes from his vast experience in Pharmacovigilance, medication management in hospitals and his three months stay at WHO unit, Geneva as voluntary staff as part of the Lucian Leape Patient Safety Fellowship Award, to give students a more real time scenario. He focused his discourse on the potential this profession holds for commerce graduates since management is at the heart of this occupation. Dr Bhowmick also specified the roles and responsibilities of the various job profiles and the approximate salary slabs under healthcare management. He concluded by stressing on the importance of having an appropriate mindset before entering the healthcare sector. Dr Bhowmick’s expatiation was exhaustive, definitive and comprehensive.
The interactive session followed which was moderated by Ms Arundhati Mazumder, where students were invited to make queries. A number of hands instantly went up requesting further clarifications. Both the speakers addressed the questions with patience giving insightful answers to the students.
The session concluded with the Vote of Thanks by senior faculty member Mr Debdutta Sen.
The overwhelming response from students in the form of a huge round of applause that resounded in the auditorium stood witness to the success of the first chapter of the Career Talk series.
