B Com is undoubtedly the Main Battle Tank of the invincible army of students marching out of the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC). And the lengths to which the college goes to provide the students with every conceivable aid (and not just in B Com) must be witnessed to be believed, making one admire not only the dedicated studiousness of the BESC students who have made success synonymous with the name of the college, but also the focussed, steadfast devotion of the management who leave nothing to chance to ensure the success.
Take CBCS for example. (And before you throw up your hands in exasperation, CBCS stands for Choice Based Credit System, which has been made effective from the academic session of 2017-18 by the University of Calcutta). A new course structure, syllabi and revised admission regulations for the three-year, six semester B Com (Honours and General) Courses of studies have also been introduced.
BESC was off the mark and a seminar “How to do well in B Com” was organised by the college, that also focussed on the intricacies of the newly introduced CBCS system. The Seminar was aptly timed, to introduce the freshers – the new students walking into the hallowed portals of the institution and ensure that they are primed to take full advantage of the system right from the beginning of the academic year.
Prof Shubhayan Basu spoke at length about the new CBCS rules. Prof Abhik Kumar Mukherjee, Prof Shoumya Mukherjee, Prof Panchanan Das and Prof Pankaj Roy were also present, who spoke on their respective domains. Financial Accounting, Economics (Macro and Micro) and Business Law papers were taken up for special discussion and instructions as it was felt that these areas needed to be clarified before the students. New dictates about attendance, marks to be obtained, patterns on which question papers will be set, the evaluation systems that are in place and the general ways in which students can maximise their successes were discussed threadbare.
Earlier, Prof Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of the BESC welcomed the speakers and the three hundred plus students who had crammed into the Concept Hall of the college. He explained the spirit behind BESC’s continuing search for excellence and its practise of co-opting experts from different fields so as to provide the students access to the cesspools of deep learning that these resources invariably are.
The speakers also answered all the queries that were raised by the students from the floor.
Dr Divyesh Shah, the Co-ordinator of the Morning Commerce Section of the College, felicitated the speakers on behalf of the college and put on record the gratitude of the College to the speakers for their time and efforts. Prof Minakshi Chaturvedi and other senior members of the faculty – Prof Sapna Saha, Prof Urvi Shukla, Prof Priti Mody and Prof Promita Mukherjee were also present in the seminar.
This report has been filed by Ramsha Rehman and Ritu Popat along with photographer Sreyanshu Mishra of the Expressions Collective of the BESC.
