The term Induction literally refers to the action or process of inducting someone to a post or an organisation. Viewed from this level, the process of Induction – and the elaborate rituals that accompany it – is just a ceremony where “freshers”, new students are formally embraced into the fraternity of the Bhawanipur Education Society College (BESC). But Professor Dilip Shah, the Dean of Student Affairs of BESC has another explanation, albeit, a more profound one.
“Induction” says Prof Shah, with a glint in his eyes, “is a process of bringing about, or giving rise to something – as the induction heating of metal in a furnace. It is the process, where we at BESC formally take charge of the young minds to turn them into the molten metal of progress”.
The comparison could not have been more apt – the furnace of a campus, where the heat is always on; the charging of raw materials, young guns ready to go for it and the end result – academic achievers and entrepreneurial stalwarts, go-getters all, is what BESC is all about. And it was a pleasure to see the spectacle of Induction unfold, the BESC way.
But before that, the numbers – and we are only talking of the Commerce Section here. In all 3000 students who were taken through the motions, spread over nine all-encompassing rounds between the 15th and the 17th of July at the Concept hall of the College. Prof Dilip Shah, ignoring the advice of his physicians doing the honours of delivering the keynote address in each and every session.
It wasn’t on predictable lines that stress “ask not what BESC can do for you, ask what you can do for BESC”. Quiet on the contrary, there were details of everything that BESC can and will do for the students – from providing them with solid doses of academics to every conceivable facility to keep their minds and bodies fit. With urges, just to raise the bar that consecutive batches of students have set in the past. Not an easy thing to ask, considering the fact that BESC is not only a powerhouse of university toppers, professional experts and industry stalwarts, but is also the hotbed of talents – borne by the fact that they had made a virtual clean sweep of the college fest titles last year, apart from being undisputed champions in sporting activities that are too numerous even to be mentioned. Prof Shah smiles enigmatically “at BESC records are made to be broken. What you think is the highwater mark of achievement today, may well become the starting point for the achievers of tomorrow”.
The Wow factor too was spectacular, to put things mildly. Every session was interspersed with high doses of entertainment – be that a fashion show, Indian classical dance, theatre or the hip-hop. There is a reason behind the elaborate spread – the eighteen “Collectives” of BESC, student bodies that organise all the major do’s of the college in the process learning the ropes even as they have fun, were using the Induction for filling up their ranks with the new comers. The professional manner in which the entire process was managed – from presentations that would make corporates proud, to collective members urging the newcomers with dangling baits of fete and fortune – was simply too well crafted for the uninitiated. And what is more, the pitch did not end on the stage, but went all the way to properly manned desks for all collectives where existing members ushered in the new.
Apart from Prof Shah, the entire process was conducted in the most glitch-less manner by Dr Divyesh Shah, the head of the Morning Commerce Department of the college and senior faculty member Prof Minakshi Chaturvedi. The back end was managed by a team of students led by Raunak, Akhil and Muskaan.
This report, along with the photographs accompanying it, is incidentally brought to you by the members of the Expressions Collective, such is the all pervasive free run that is accorded to the students of BESC. And that is just to prove the point.
