Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagore’s immortal lines “Where the Mind is without Fear” played in the background as the Convocation procession – comprising of the Chairman of the Bhawanipur Education Society College, Champak Bhai Doshi; the Chief Guest Chetan Bhagat; the Vice Chairman Miraj D Shah; the Director General Prof Suman K Mukherjee; the Dean of Student Affairs Prof Dilip Shah; the Rector; the Teacher in Charge and senior members of the faculty moved on stage in full ceremonial regalia. The Guests were welcomed and the Ceremonial Lamp of Knowledge ignited to formally begin the proceedings of the solemn occasion – the Convocation of the Class of 2017.
Flames, the dance collective of the institution strung the note of the investiture ceremony with a brilliant rendition of a classical dance recital, which was appreciated by the students, their parents, members of the faculty and invited guests who had thronged the auditorium.
The Director General of BESC, Prof Suman K Mukherjee, gave the welcome speech, followed by the Dean of Student Affairs Prof Dilip Shah who welcomed the Chief Guest of the evening, celebrity author, script writer and television personality, Chetan Bhagat. Delving deep into his experiences from life, he gave a rousing talk, marked by his trademark witticisms, wherein he urged the students to script their own success stories in what he termed as, the movie called life.
“Every five years, Life has taught me new lessons” said Bhagat, going on to recount the nine such phases through which he has moved in life so far, explaining how each has given him new realisations. However, he struck the right chord when he pointed out that even though he was not blessed with God-gifted talents like for example Sachin Tendulkar was, the very fact that he was invited as the Chief Guest of the evening was vindication of the fact that even so-called ordinary people can achieve great heights by sheer grit and determination. Naturally, when he followed it up, exhorting the students to doggedly chase their dreams to their logical fulfilment, the ovation was tumultuous.
In all 422 students were honoured for their academic achievements with the scrolls of honour being formally bestowed upon them.
The convocation was a vindication of the tremendous strides being made by the institution academically as it was marked by a definite surge in the achievements of the students. BESC students, who have traditionally comprised the largest body in terms of numbers cracking the University examinations with top honours continued in their winning streak as satisfaction was recorded for another, if predictable, year marked by all-round educational excellence.
The event was anchored by college students Ayush Tewari and Muskan Kedia.
The formal ceremony ended with the students flinging their Mortar Boards (also known as Graduate Caps) in air as is customary with graduation ceremonies. Students also had their fill of Selfies in front of the backdrop that was specially erected for the purpose.
The report has been filed by Sakshi Shaw along with camera persons Mayank Giria, Shagun Lunia, Yash Jain, Mayank Narsaria and Rajarshi Das of the Expressions Collective of the BESC.
